San Diego & La Jolla

ENGLISH

We have spent most of our day in San Diego. When we planned our trip, we wanted to cross the border with Mexico and visit Tijuana. However, due to the high rise in criminality in the area, we were told that it was not safe for us to travel to Mexico, so we decided to stay in San Diego. We started with downtown San Diego, where we strolled the streets of the socalled Glaslamp Quarter. This Quarter was developed in the 1870s with a strip of saloons, gambling joints and brothels known as Stingaree. Afterwards we went to the Embarcadero, the waterfront. There, the galleon-like San Diego Convention Center overlooks San Diego Bay, and the waterfront pathway takes you to an array of shops, cosy restaurants and has views across to the aircraft carriers of the North Island United States Naval Air Station.

Later on, we drove to the socalled Oldtown, where San Diego's earliest buildings are situated. Indeed, until the 1870s San Diego was centerd around the presidio, the site of the original Spanish military outpost. We could see more than 20 historics buildings from this period, which have been restored. I was particularly impressed by the Wells Fargo Building. Wells Fargo is a company which opened in NY in 1852 offering baking services and mail delivery to the pioneers on the Pacific Coast. By the 1860s the company managed the largest stagecoach empire in the world, also carrying people across the US.

We ate our lunch in a typical Mexican cantina and continued to La Jolla, a lovely seaside resort town, filled with the finest boutiques and specialty shops. We saw Ferrari and Maserati dealers in town, to give an example.

Finally, we drove to LA, (with less traffic this time - thanks God! ) where we are gonna stay the next 5 days.
